Four things. All pointing at the same outcome.

Traditional SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you cited. We build everything needed to close that gap — for your site, your clients' sites, and the field itself.

  1. AI Visibility Scoring

We score any website across 7 dimensions — Technical Foundation, Semantic Content, Off-Site Citations, Governance, Content Architecture, Entity Authority, and Trust Signals — and produce a grade from F to A. Every score comes with a prioritized action plan.

What AEO and GEO actually mean.

These are operational definitions — the ones our tools, audits, and scoring system are built on. Not buzzwords. Working frameworks.

AEOAnswer Engine Optimization

AEO is the practice of structuring web content so AI models can extract, understand, and cite it in generated responses. It targets the retrieval and reasoning systems used by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini — not the keyword indexes used by traditional search.

AEO is not a rebrand of SEO. It operates on a different signal set and requires different execution.

  • Structured data and schema markup
  • Entity clarity and topical authority
  • FAQ and definition-layer content
  • Citation-worthy content architecture
  • Clean, parseable heading hierarchy
  • Answer-first paragraph structure
GEOGenerative Engine Optimization

GEO is the practice of optimizing content to appear in AI-generated summaries and answers. While AEO focuses on whether AI models can find and understand your content, GEO focuses on whether your content gets used when AI generates a response.

GEO is most relevant for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot.

  • Content that directly answers questions
  • Statistic and data density
  • Quotable, attributable sentences
  • Original research and primary sources
  • Authoritativeness signals (E-E-A-T)
  • Summary-ready content blocks
AI VisibilityComposite Score Across 7 Dimensions

AI Visibility is the degree to which a brand, website, or entity is recognized, cited, and recommended by AI language models. A site with high AI visibility is one AI models actively reference when answering relevant questions.

We score AI visibility from F (invisible) to A (authoritative) using 7 weighted dimensions.

  • Technical Foundation
  • Semantic Content
  • Off-Site Citations
  • Governance and Monitoring
  • Content Architecture
  • Entity Authority
  • Trust Signals
LLM OptimizationLarge Language Model Content Engineering

LLM optimization is the technical and editorial practice of making content legible to large language models during both training and inference. It encompasses crawlability by LLM indexers, content structure for RAG pipelines, and entity relationships for knowledge graph retrieval.

LLM optimization underpins AEO and GEO — it is the infrastructure layer both sit on.

  • Clean HTML with semantic structure
  • Robots.txt and llms.txt configuration
  • RAG-friendly content chunking
  • Knowledge graph entity relationships
  • Consistent entity naming conventions

The 7-Dimension AI Visibility Score

Every site we score — including our own — is evaluated across seven dimensions. Each dimension maps to a specific set of AI citation signals. Every score comes with a prioritized task list to close the gap.

We started at F. We're building to B. Live.

idea-lab.ai began as a site with poor AI visibility — no schema, weak entity structure, minimal citations. We are documenting every step of the rebuild, in public, as a living proof-of-concept for our methodology.

Why SEO and AEO require different approaches

SEO and AEO are not the same discipline with a new name. They target different systems, optimize for different outputs, and require different signal sets.

How we work. What makes it defensible.

Our methodology is public. Every framework, every scoring dimension, every experiment finding is documented and citable. We don't sell black-box audits — we sell transparency you can verify and replicate.

  1. 01

    Test Before We Publish

Every recommendation in our tools and audits is validated through the Public AI Visibility Experiment — real-world testing across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini before it becomes a task or a framework.

  2. 02

Score With a Rubric, Not Intuition

Every AI Visibility Score is produced by applying the same 7-dimension rubric — the same criteria, the same weights, the same task taxonomy — whether we're scoring a Fortune 500 brand or a solo creator's newsletter.

  3. 03

    Audit Ourselves First

idea-lab.ai's own site is subject to the same scoring system we apply to clients and audits. We started at F and are documenting every step of the rebuild. No methodology we publish exists only in theory.

  4. 04

    Separate SEO From AEO

We do not conflate traditional SEO signals with AEO signals. Our tools, audits, and scoring system are built specifically for AI visibility — not repurposed SEO checklists with new branding.

  5. 05

    Update Monthly as Models Evolve

AI models change. What drives citation in June may not drive citation in December. Our Pro tool tier includes 12 monthly updates from the experiment. Our methodology documentation is versioned and dated.

  6. 06

    Build in Public

Our experiment findings are published openly. Our own site rebuild is documented openly. Our scoring rubric is documented openly. Transparency is not a feature — it is how AEO authority is built.

Two audiences. One problem.

The creator who spent years building an audience. The consultant who built a practice on SEO expertise. Both are facing the same threat: AI is replacing search as the first answer — and most of them aren't in it.

Content Creators

Writers, podcasters, newsletter authors, subject matter experts, and thought leaders who have built bodies of work — and need that work to be found, cited, and recommended by AI.

  • Structure content for AI citation, not just human readers
  • Build entity authority that AI models recognize
  • Understand why their content isn't appearing in AI answers
  • Implement AEO without a technical team
  • Track AI visibility as a KPI alongside traditional analytics

SEO Consultants and Agencies

SEO professionals, digital marketing agencies, and independent consultants who want to add AI visibility auditing to their service stack — and bill the gap between where clients are and where AI can find them.

  • Add a structured AEO audit to their service offering
  • Present AI visibility scores as a client deliverable
  • Differentiate from competitors still selling only SEO
  • Use a defensible, methodology-backed scoring system
  • Stay current as AI search behavior evolves monthly

Questions about AEO, GEO, and AI Visibility

These are the questions we hear most from creators and consultants — and the ones AI models ask when deciding whether to cite a source.

QWhat is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so that AI models can extract, understand, and cite it in AI-generated responses. AEO differs from traditional SEO in that it targets AI retrieval systems — the models used by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini — rather than keyword-based search indexes. Key AEO signals include structured data markup, entity clarity, topical authority clustering, citation-worthy content formatting, and semantic heading hierarchy.
QWhat is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content to appear in AI-generated summaries and answers. While AEO focuses on whether AI models can find and understand your content, GEO focuses on whether your content is selected and cited when an AI generates a response. GEO is most relevant for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot.
QWhat is the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO targets keyword-based search engines. AEO targets AI answer engines. SEO optimizes for a ranked list of results; AEO optimizes for a cited answer in a generated response. SEO relies on backlinks, keyword density, and domain authority. AEO relies on entity clarity, structured data, topical depth, and citation-worthy content architecture. Both disciplines matter, but they operate on fundamentally different signal sets.
QHow does idea-lab.ai score AI visibility?
idea-lab.ai scores AI visibility across 7 dimensions: Technical Foundation, Semantic Content, Off-Site Citations, Content Architecture, Entity Authority, Trust Signals, and Governance & Monitoring. Each dimension is evaluated against a rubric of specific signals and weighted to produce an overall AI Visibility Grade from F (invisible to AI) to A (actively cited by AI models). Every score includes a prioritized action plan categorized by Tier 1 Critical, Tier 2 High Impact, and Tier 3 Growth tasks.
QWhat is the idea-lab.ai Public AI Visibility Experiment?
The Public AI Visibility Experiment is an ongoing study by idea-lab.ai testing which specific signals drive citation and recommendation by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. We test schema configurations, content structures, entity patterns, citation source types, and governance protocols — then measure what actually moves AI visibility scores across industries. Findings are published monthly.
QWho is idea-lab.ai for?
idea-lab.ai serves content creators and SEO consultants who want to be found by AI models, not just search engines. Content creators — writers, podcasters, newsletter authors, and subject matter experts — use our tools to structure their work for AI citation. SEO consultants and digital agencies use our scoring system and audit framework to add AI visibility as a billable service.
QWhat is the F-to-B public rebuild?
The F-to-B public rebuild is idea-lab.ai's live documentation of rebuilding our own website from an F-grade AI Visibility Score to a B-grade — in public, step by step. We started with a site that had poor schema coverage, weak entity structure, no llms.txt, and minimal citation authority. We are applying every tool, task, and framework we publish to our own site and documenting the process openly.
QDoes having good SEO mean good AI visibility?
No. Good SEO does not guarantee AI visibility, and strong AI visibility does not require strong traditional SEO. We have audited sites that rank #1–3 on Google for competitive keywords but score F on AI visibility because they lack schema markup, have unclear entity structure, and produce no citation-worthy content. Both matter — but they require separate, parallel optimization strategies.

The way people find information is changing faster than most creators and consultants can track. Google built careers. AI is rebuilding them from scratch.

Every day, people ask ChatGPT which tool to use, which consultant to hire, which creator to follow. Most of the people who should be in that answer aren't.

Not because they lack expertise. Because their sites aren't structured for AI. Their entities aren't defined. Their content doesn't speak the language of the systems now answering the questions.

We exist to close that gap. With tools you can use today. With a methodology you can verify. With a live experiment proving what actually works.

The AI era doesn't erase good work. It just requires you to make it legible to machines that didn't exist when you built it.
